Introduction

The paintings in this gallery are displayed to commemorate the contribution of Mary Tregear (1924-2010) to the Ashmolean Museum, as Assistant Keeper and then Keeper of the Department of Eastern Art between 1961 and 1991. Miss Tregear was born in China and came to Oxford from a post at Hong Kong University Museum at a time when the Department of Eastern Art was newly established. With great flair and foresight she assisted in building up the collections, particularly in the fields of ceramics and modern paintings, which few museums were then collecting. The works exhibited here include paintings acquired for the Ashmolean by her, a selection of those presented in her honour, and two paintings by the Hong Kong artist Lui Shou-Kwan that she herself bequeathed.

Eastern Art Online presents an extended version of this temporary display in the Ashmolean's China gallery, providing additional contextual information about the works, as well as the opportunity for viewers to browse, search and explore high-quality zoomable images of these hanging scrolls and works on paper.
